What is Late Fertilization?

Late fertilization is when the ovulation time starts later for some reason. In cases where pregnancy does not occur, if ovulation occurs late, menstrual bleeding is also delayed. The average period for a regular menstrual cycle in women is between 28-35 days. The ovulation day also occurs 14 days before the menstrual date. In normal sexual intercourse, the sperm inside the vagina is fertilized. However, despite fertilization, the egg cell moves into the uterus and clings to the inner wall of the uterus. At the end of this process, the embryo is formed. If ovulation occurs after 14 days in a woman with a 28-day menstrual cycle, it is called late ovulation or fertilization. It is something that happens to many women.

Who gets late fertilization?

In couples who are considering having a child, it is a question that is wondered in whom and in which situations late fertilization will occur. In certain cases, fertilization will occur later than the expected date. People who are prone to late fertilization are as follows;

  • Those with pelvic infections
  • Find menstrual irregularity problems
  • Those who are under extreme stress in daily life
  • Those who use hormonal drugs
  • Those with polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Those with fibroid and polyp complaints
  • Those with pituitary gland complaints may have a late ovulation problem.
  • Any factor that disrupts the menstrual cycle can lead to late fertilization of the egg. Therefore, it is more likely to be seen in women who have intense menstrual irregularity or who have significant deviations in their menstrual period.

What are the causes of late fertilization?

There is no definite cause for late fertilization problems. Some of the reasons identified in those who have this problem are as follows;

  • Intense stress has an effect on hormone levels. If you are going through stressful times, your hormones are secreted irregularly and affect the egg. In this case, late fertilization may occur.
  • The formations seen in the ovary region disrupt the hormone levels. As a result, egg release may also be affected.
  • If prolactin levels are higher than they should be, the estrogen hormone may become unbalanced. In these cases, the ovulation period may also be adversely affected.
  • Disorders in the thyroid gland also change the ovulation period and lead to late fertilization.
  • In women who lose at least one-fifth of their body weight in an instant, the levels of luteinized and follicle stimulating hormone required for ovulation are significantly reduced. This results in late spawning.

Some medications you use can also delay pregnancy. If you are planning a pregnancy to avoid this situation, you should definitely give your doctor a list of the medications you use.

When is pregnancy evident in late fertilization?

The working principle of pregnancy tests is to measure the level of hormones in the blood or urine. As soon as the embryo is attached to the inner wall of the uterus, pregnancy hormones begin to be secreted in the body. In this case, the level of HCG hormone begins to rise regularly every day. In case of delay in the menstrual period, you can do the test by suspecting that you are pregnant.

Urine pregnancy tests can be purchased at a pharmacy and easily performed at home. You can get accurate results within 3-5 days after the expected menstrual date. In case of late fertilization, this process takes a little longer. It may take longer for the fertilized egg to become active by attaching to the uterus.

Although your pregnancy test is positive, an embryonic appearance may not be revealed even if you perform ultrasound imaging. This situation is frequently experienced in late fertilization. Since the embryo or a sac has just formed, ultrasound control should be performed again in the future.

What are the signs of late fertilization?

Late ovulation symptoms are exactly the same as normal ovulation. The symptoms that will allow you to understand that there is a late fertilization situation are as follows;

Vaginal discharge occurs during ovulation.Clear, transparent and odorless discharge like egg white is one of the signs of late fertilization.
Mild spotting seen during vaginal discharge may also be a symptom.
Basal body temperature is measured at rest or during sleep. This value increases by 1 degree as the ovulation process approaches.
In case of late fertilization, pain may be seen in the abdominal and pelvic regions. In addition, the pains and cramps are one-sided and sharp.

Is late fertilization risky?

It is some irregularities in the ovulation process that cause the late fertilization problem. However, there may be an abnormality in the egg released during this process. As a result of the researches, there is no genetic or developmental difference in pregnancies with late fertilization.

Nor do the figures reveal an increased risk of miscarriage in pregnancies resulting from late fertilization. In other words, all the risks that may arise in this case are the same as pregnancies with normal ovulation.

One of the biggest complaints in case of late fertilization is the calculation of the week of pregnancy. The date of the last menstrual period is considered the beginning of pregnancy. The date of birth is determined accordingly. When there is a late fertilization, there are some differences between the last menstrual period and the baby's development.

Does late fertilization affect gender?

Early or late fertilization has no effect on the sex of the child. There is no change in the chances of giving birth to a girl or a boy in expectant mothers who experience this situation. Its only effect is the change in gestational age. Therefore, it is very wrong to associate late fertilization with sex.

Regardless of the start time of the fertilization process, early pregnancy symptoms are also seen. In other words, even if there is a late fertilization, early pregnancy symptoms may occur. While these symptoms may occur in some women, they are not felt at all in some people. It should never be forgotten that late fertilization is also among the most normal processes of pregnancy.
