WHAT IS DONATION?

The word donation means donation. Donation is to donate an organ or tissue to a person in need. In IVF treatments, donation is made as sperm donation or egg donation.

TYPES OF DONATION

In IVF treatment, donation is divided into three groups; egg donation, sperm donation and embryo donation.

Egg donation: It is the process of using another woman's egg during the fertilization process. To women who have a healthy uterus but cannot actively fulfill their ovulation feature; It is one of the reproductive methods that occurs when the eggs of another young, healthy and fertility-proven woman are donated and fertilized by the sperm of her own partner.
Who can be applied to egg donation:

  • It can be applied to women who have a healthy uterus, but who have entered menopause in the early period due to various factors.
  • It can be applied to women with genetic defects in egg cells.
  • It can be applied to women whose ovaries have been removed or damaged due to any discomfort.
  • It can be applied to women who are likely to inherit diseases to their babies.
  • It can be applied to women who have repeated unsuccessful results in IVF treatment.
  • It can be applied to women with reduced egg reserves due to age.
  • It can be applied to women who have experienced recurrent miscarriages during pregnancy due to chromosomal abnormalities.

Conditions of being a donor in the egg donation process:

  • Donors must be between the ages of 20 and 28.

  • There should be no general health problems.

  • Egg quality and reserve should be at a high level.

  • Donors should not have a family history of diseases such as mental retardation.

  • They should not have a hereditary disease.

  • The most important condition is that the donors are not drug addicts.

  • Should not have any contagious diseases.

  • Blood group compatibility is important in donor selection.


Tests required for egg donation:

For women: Hbs AG, Anti HCV, Anti HIV, Anti HBC, VDRL, complete blood count, blood group analysis, fasting blood sugar, urea, SGOT, SGPT, FSH (if menstruation occurs, it should be done on the 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual period), If AMH, LH, pelvic ultrasound are deemed necessary, uterine film or hysteroscopy, and expectant mothers aged 45 and over should receive reports from CARDIOLOGY AND INTERNATIONAL specialists that there is no obstacle in getting pregnant and giving birth.

For men: Sperm analysis (Spermiogram) It is recommended to be given after 3 days of sexual abstinence, Hbs AG, Anti HCV, Anti HIV, Anti, HBC, VDRL, Blood group analysis.

Sperm donation: The use of another man's sperm during the fertilization process. It is the treatment method used in cases where there is no live sperm in the man or it is not suitable for use.

In which conditions sperm donation is preferred:

  • In cases where there is little or no sperm from the male individual and the individual cannot respond to IVF treatments,
  • In cases where sperm cannot be obtained with the microdissection surgical method called Micro TESE,
  • In cases where failure is achieved due to problems in sperm shape, ie Morphology
  • In cases where the person has a congenital lack of sperm production
  • In cases where there are testicular problems caused by cancer treatments such as radiotherapy or chemotherapy, sperm donation, that is, sperm transplantation, is preferred.

Conditions of being a donor in the sperm donation process:

Donors must be between the ages of 18 and 40.

There should be no general health problems.

Sperm quality and reserve should be at the highest level.

They should not have a hereditary disease.

Embryo donation: Embryo donation is the process of creating pregnancy by transferring the sperm and egg cells from the donors into the uterus of the expectant mother after fertilization in the laboratory environment.
The stages of embryo donation are as follows;

Donation screening: Before this procedure, the medical history of the couples and previous IVF treatments are examined. A decision is then made on eligibility for the donation process.

Donor selection: In embryo transfer, the sperm cells and egg cells required for pregnancy are provided by the donors. The donor can be determined by the IVF center, or it can be someone known to the mother and father-to-be.

Donation preparation: Before embryo donation, expectant mothers go through the preparation process. The uterus of the expectant mother is made ready for pregnancy with some drugs. The expectant mother should not menstruate before the procedure and the uterus should be ready for pregnancy. When the expectant mother is ready, the embryo is transferred into the uterus.

Fertilization: There are some drugs for the expectant mother and the donor in embryo donation procedures. Eggs are collected 10-12 days after the donor and fertilized in the laboratory with sperm cells specially brought to the father-to-be.

Embryo transfer: After successful fertilization in the donation process, the embryo is transferred into the suitable uterus. The expectant mother can join the donation painlessly in a few minutes under ultrasound guidance. After embryo transfer, the pregnancy process is normal.
